Bilingual & Hispanic jobs / career social networking | LatPro

There is a huge gap in representation from the Latino community in the teaching profession. Maybe not so apparent in typically Hispanic areas of the country, but in places where the Hispanic population is emerging, there is a cavernous gap. Nationally, while 17% of students are Latino, only about 5% of the teachers are Latino. And in states like Arkansas, North Carolina, and Wisconsin, where Latino students make up as much as 40% of some school districts, those same school districts have 1% or less of Latino teachers. There is also a gap in Latino professors in these emerging Latino population states. The good news is this creates a wonderful opportunity for Latino teachers or those aspiring to become teachers. It also creates a challenge for us to encourage or Latino children to stay in school, get higher education, and choose teaching as a career. All ideas or comment are welcomed. Contact me directly if you want to know more about the opportunities in my home state of Arkansas.

I would like to know if there are opportunities for college professors in film and/or media studies. I am from Mexico, but I have a J1 visa that would allow me to work in the States during the 2009-2010 academic year.

Thanks in advance,
Manuel

I agree with you and think that is time for Latino professionals to join together and change this since in a very near future we will be the biggest minority. I was an assistant professor of Analytical Chemistry in Universidad Nacional de El Salvador , moved to the USA in the late 80's but worked in the pharmaceutical industry for over 14 years as a chemist. Recently lost my job and I have decided to go back to what I really like to do which is teaching, any advice where to start. I am currently living in Allentown,PA. I do not see many opportunities here for Hispanics. Most than anything else want to make a impact and help others in our Latino communities. Hope to hear your thoughts,
Maria

Maria, First of all I am so proud you made the choice to go into teaching, again. Yes, there is great opportunity for all Latino professionals in education these days... but more important we do need more teachers from Hispanic cultures in the schools. Hey, and with the recession and all, education is one of the most recession proof jobs. I would and have encoureaged all Latino professionals to consider a second career in teaching. Hasta pronto, Rey

Hello Rey:

I lived in Dalton Georgia where I had the wonderful opportunity to teach spanish and ESOL to Hispanic Population and to Anglo Students too, unfurtunately my work visa finished before I complete my certification in Georgia, therefore i had to return to Mexico, but I really want to go back to USA and continue with my labor there.

It was gratifying to help Hispanic Population in schools, to encourage students and parents to continue with their education, to let them know that they can make it. And to feel their success as my own success.

Personally I had wonderful stories about my Hispanic students that made me feel useful, satisfied and proud of all of them, and also proud of have been the bridge they needed to pursue a higher education and a better and different kind of life.

Would you please give more information about teaching in Arkansas?
Thank You Very Much in Advance.
Blanca BalMar

Dear Mr. Hernandez: I am presently a principal of a small school servicing and educating emotionally disturbed adolescents (grades 7-12). A significant amount of my students are Latinos. My teaching staff is not. I have tried diligently to hire Latinos, however this has been virtually impossible. Where are certified Latino teachers in NJ?

Virgilio Manuel,

We faced many of the same challenges here in Arkansas. One challenge is recruiting Latino's away from traditinally Hispanic areas and asking them to leave the comforts of their families for an opportunity. The good news is this economy has put some out of work and are now seeking to go anywhere they can. Locally, we have begun a program to try and grow our own by working with the colleges and universities to identify candidates and assist them toward getting their credentials and certifications. Your local LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) may be able to help and you can get information about LULAC at www.lulac.org which will also give you links to LNESC for scholarship information and SER for Latino hiring information. Best wishes. My direct contact e-mail is rhernandez1@nwacc.edu if I can be of further assistance.

Buena suerte,
Rey

Cesar,

Best of luck with your move to Texas. There should be plenty of opportunities to work as an educator in the adult education systems there. I would encourage you to find the states department for higher education and inquire about how to teach at colleges and universities. But keep in mind also that many companies and organizations are also looking for ways to teach Spanish to their managers and English to their workers, so you may consider going into business for yourself and submit proposals to companies with that need. My direct e-mail is rhernandez1@nwacc.edu if I can help in any way.

Saludos,
Rey
