Obama Lifts Travel Restrictions to Cuba for Cuban Americans - What are your thoughts?

U.S. President Barack Obama has decided to lift restrictions on travel and money transfer to Cuba for Cuban-Americans, CNN reported on Monday.

The White House is expected to announce the decision later Monday, which would be a significant shift in U.S. policy toward Cuba, according to CNN.

Since the 1959 Cuban Revolution, the U.S.-Cuba relations have deteriorated with sustaining tension and confrontation. The former Bush administration imposed restrictions on travel and money transfer to Cuba for Cuban-Americans.

Obama has said he wants to remove the restrictions so that Americans can visit relatives and transfer money to their families in Cuba, and that he would be willing to speak with Cuban leaders "without preconditions."

So what do you think? Will this change impact your life or the lives of those you know? Weigh-in!

Hello, I think this is great. I got tears in my eyes when I read the news. During the 90s I went to Cuba six times to help my in laws with food and humanitarian help. I saw so much suffering and starvation there it's hard to even talk about it...I always wished I could have done more...I saw so many families separated...a friend of mine couldn't go back to Cuba because of the 3 year restriction (you could only go every three years) and her sister got very ill and died and she couldn't go back and see her because she had gone a couple of years before. Pobres cubanos. Un dia su sufrimiento va a acabar. :) This is a move in the right direction. Good going Obama!

This was a long time overdue. I am glad that the adminsitration is taking positive steps to allow tCubans and families of American Cubans to some day go home and interact with lost families. It will certainly change and impact many Cuban lives of my friends with families there..Coupled with all this, the doors of opportunities will open once again, and Cuba can take part of that wonderful adventure for new business it once had.

"Obama has said he wants to remove the restrictions so that Americans can visit relatives and transfer money to their families in Cuba... "

How can this possibly be regulated? If the restrictions are removed, how can you differentiate from someone who has family they hope to help and a tourist?

I am afraid this is simply an opportunity for Americans to travel to Cuba without going through Canada (as many have done). I agree with el senor Espinosa, who responded here, that tourism in Cuba which has been constant for over 30 years has done absolutely nothing to help the Cuban people because the government gets all the money and for all the so-called promises of Communism that money is NOT shared with the people. For all of Fidel and other Communists' criticism of Capitalism feeding the rich and depriving the poor all evidence proves that human greed is existent in all forms of government and economy. Few if any are left in Cuba who were denied exodus instead it is those who chose to remain and the progeny of said who live there at present. Let them suffer their own mistakes and if they ever awaken to the reality that their Communist government is a farce then perhaps the American government can help. I don't see any advantage to lifting the restrictions and the least the American government can do to repay those who died at the Bay of Pigs due to Kennedy's cowardice, those who were imprisoned, and all those who suffered Exodus especially those who died in the U.S. never seeing their country again is to keep the embargo. I can't say that the embargo has been at all successful (although this is not because of the U.S. but rather the many other countries who did not support our embargo and have allowed their countrymen to travel to Cuba) but if our country truly is about democracy then as a point of principle the embargo should remain.

I must say that I am fed up of ignorant Americans asking if I've ever visited Cuba and if I'm looking forward to going if the restrictions are lifted. I have no family there, those who remained chose to and whether they are living or dead they are dead to me. I have absolutely no intention of traveling to Cuba and letting my money feed the man who imprisoned my grandfather, let Fidel and his fellow Communists rot. Someday perhaps I'll be able to visit a democratic Cuba but I'm not holding my breath.

I am overwhelmed with gratitude to Mr. Obama for this 'out of the box' thinking. New times are upon us, which engender many changes on ALL levels for EVERYONE. One cannot bring a nation or a world (or a family) together if there is distance, non communication or closed doors. There must be interchange, dialogue, exchange, so that minds can open. Not quickly, but eventually, this is an excellent move.

I have lost my entire family in Cuba in the past 40 years. All I have left is 2 cousins. I never got to say I love you in person, hug them, or help them, or for that matter, be able to enjoy my roots, which run through my veins. Now, perhaps soon, I will be able to hug my cousins, meet their children, and we can cry and love together.

I was born in Colombia but came to live in South Florida in the mid 60's. I have grown amongst the Cuban people of South Florida and admire most of them for their tenacity, willingness to work the most humble jobs like washing dishes only to carve their future success into the roots of Miami's own amazing expansion. The ban on the Cuban people to travel and send money to relatives did nothing to change the minds of the leaders of Cuba, it just made it harder for those wondering about the wellbeing of their relatives and for the Cubans residing there. Mr. Obama as usual has a wider vision of the world, of compassion and understanding and I applaud him for finding time to accomplish yet another task to resolve the issues that in the end affect us all.
