Palin vs Sotomayor

J.C. Arenas

Why has Sarah Palin conducted more interviews with Univision, the Spanish-language network with the largest Latin American audience, than the "wise Latina", Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor?

Considering how much Sotomayor tried to establish her Puerto Rican heritage as both a blessing and a curse throughout her rise to the top, I find this to be a disgrace.

But hey, at least she has time to go speak once more at Yale.

Jimmy,

I think you miss the point. Yes we're all Americans and we should be proud of that. However, Sonia Sotomayor has never taken a step back and said look I'm just an American. Throughout her life she has presented herself as a Puerto Rican first, American second, despite of the inherent ridiculousness of that line of thinking -- for obvious reasons.

I believe the reason she hasn't conducted an interview with a major Spanish-language network is because she doesn't really have a command of the language to be able to do that. I have no doubt she can do more than order off a Taco Bell menu, but I don't believe she speaks fluently or at least well enough to do such an interview.

Sarah Palin can give an interview with Univision and they can overdub her with a Spanish speaker to translate what she says, she's not a Spanish speaker so that's not a surprise. But Latin Americans would expect Sotomayor to be able to communicate with them in their language. Her inability to do so would further shred her credibility and again I say this because she set herself to be something that she's not, at least on the scale she claimed to be.
