Hi everybody,
No, I didn't get in this profession by tripping on a coax cable. I have always been atracted by electricity since I was in high school and following a flow of electrons I ended up graduating in electronics, in computer engineering, and software was just one step away. So, I have worked all my life in software development, and today I own a web development company called Panwebtek, which you can find at www.myhostingpalace.com. I am looking to find web developers, freelance programmers, so we can build a network of professionals in this area, and try to help each other when needed.
Luis, I lived in Venezuela for more than 30 years, so saludos de mi parte. Me gustaría comunicarme contigo para saber un poco más de tí.
Saludos a todos!

I first became enamored with computers in the mid '90s learning Basic, Pascal, Fortran, and assembly language on the Apple II computer. My first job out of college was as a computer programmer at Compaq in Houston, TX where I was a C and Assembly language programmer. Most importantly, during that time I had my first opportunity to travel to Mexico where I fell in love with the Spanish language. The door opened up at Compaq to work in the Latin America division where I improved greatly my Spanish and became reasonably fluent in Portuguese. I took some time off from the computer field to do some mission work, but my computer skills continued to be used. I now teach IT classes fulltime at a career college in Rockford, IL. I have been working on improving my skills for the current job market. I don't regret the time that I took off from computers to pursue other interests, but it does take time to catch up. The technology is continuously changing and you have to keep up. My best advice is to really enjoy what you are doing. You don't have to be a super geek, but you do have to like computers and using them to solve tasks. I see too many students at the school where I teach who think that you just take some classes, get a simple degree, and doors will suddenly open. However, these same students don't really enjoy them. You have to like what you are doing whatever it is, and keep a positive attitude whatever the circumstances. I look forward to being part of this new group with all of you.

I started in the IT industry when i came out to college. I started with the student tech support and now i work with faculty and staff tech support. I do not know if i will remain in this field after i graduate but if I can find something that uses some IT I would really like it. I was born in Argentina but live in the USA. I don't have much advice as I am still relatively new to the field (<3years) so I really am looking for advice on what I can do with 4 years of helpdesk work.

I am working in IT field more than 25 years mainly in the Pharmaceutical Industry. I am Industrial Engineer but all my professional carrier was done in IT management field as business partner working with business management defining strategic plans and developing tactics for execution of strategies, managing IT resources and executing and controlling budgets approved.

My carrier in IT gave a lot of opportunites to learn and interact with different cultures and management styles as the Direction of the Latin America at Wyeth, during my years working in Europe as Director of the Peninsula Iberica and in the USA as part of headquarters of a large corporation.

I switched a couple of years from direct line management to work as Program Director to manage the program of Data Center Consolidations, but I want to go back to IT management working for international.

One of the the greatest challenge was to work with senior business management to get approval for funding and resources needed to execute strategies, and of course, the challenge of the economy changes in past years and tought environment of the industry with the law suits and regulations impossed by the FDA and global agencies for the pharmaceutical Industry.

I am originally from Bogota, Colombia and naturalized as US citizen.

My advice to collegues is that we need to manage IT as a business unit aligning all activities with business needs and priorities to get business support and resources needed to succeed.

Hi everyone,
I'm a Computer Consultant working in IT field for more than 20 years. I came to USA in 2005 with my wife and 3 boys. In my country, Argentina, I was working as IT Manager on a Healthcare Company, for about 13 years. In this country, since January 2008, when we got the Green Cards, I began to work as self-employed, with several customers. Anyway, I would like to work in a Company, on site or telecommute.
I know a lot about programming and database, I was working for about 5 years with Oracle, and I realy enjoy doing that.
Well, I guess the best advice is, keep learning every day, the IT field...endless.
