I have a passion for human resources which was developed through the U.S. Marine Corps and at the Ohio State University. Over the years I have progressed to the Director level for a multi state manufacturing operation. I have been a generalist most of my career, however I spent several years as a specialist in EEO and training/development. My career has taken me into Operations Management for a Tier 1 supplier to Nissan and Honda. I have strong understanding of implementation and delivery of improvement ideas utilizing lean principles with tools such as Value Stream Mapping, shop floor management activities, and other quality and analysis tools.

Focus and strong determination to improve myself has led me to new opportunities and growth in my career. My bilingual skills have proven useful in several of my jobs and have introduced me to opportunities that otherwise would have not been available to me.

I have a degree in Psychology and early on in my career I started working in Orgaizational Psychology and I just stayed in the field.
I plan to remain in this path for the next 10-15 years.
I am from Colombia, but live in Atlanta now.
The greatest challenge is keeping updated with all the laws and changes.

My name is Antonia Herrera, I've worked in government for many years in managment and the last five in Human Resources. I have a masters degree in Organizatinal Management and would like to transition to the private sector. I keep applying and most businesses want experience in the private sector, any suggestions on how to overcome this barrier. I am bilingual also. Antonia

Estimada Antonia:

If I were you, I'd start to apply to companies that do business with State and Local government. Depending on the governmental org you work for, it must have one or more industries that sell into that governmental org. For example, imagine how many businesses service Health and Human Services or Transportation. If you consider that the Stimulus Bill was just passed for Federal, State and Local government, there should be several organizations that would want to hire you because you know your way in and out of government. Just my 2 cents.

I am a Human Resources Professional from San Juan, Puerto Rico with 15 years of senior management experience, in small to large companies with international exposure managing several areas within the HR arena.
I started in this profession as a student intern with Eastern airlines, several years later I was appointed by a former governor of Puerto Rico Director of labor standards. This appointment launches my career expectations because shortly before the end of my term I was offered an HR Director position with a Baskin Robbins, position held for several years. During my tenure with Baskin Robbins, I received an offer to work as a Sr. industrial Relations/Human Resources Director for a French company doing business in Puerto Rico name Ondeo. Upon Ondeo move out back to France, I decided to move back to the United States to reside in Dallas, Texas.

I enjoy my career in Human Resources, and plan to continue with this career track. My greatest challenge has been this current economical crisis in which I became part of a company re-organization with redirected my career into other avenues, but currently I’m looking to get back in route to my next HR landing.

Is my advice to anyone in this field that the sky is the limit. In the HR arena there are many opportunities for Latinos, and for everyone who is bilingual. This is our time to put our leadership into action.

Hello All,
My name is Marisol Castillo. I am the oldest and only girl of seven children. I was born in Puebla Mexico. I am currently an HR Director with 13 years of experience in the private and public sector. My introduction to HR was at the age of 19 for the County of Riverside in Ca. I was blessed to have had an amazing mentor that not only taught me the basis of HR but was an extraordinary example of an accomplished Latina.
Family:
My mother who only had a third grade education pushed and assisted all seven of her children through our education. She inspired our achievements and fed our goals. She and my father always kept our sight on the “big picture” and looking for the next victory. I am proud to say that through many discriminating, embarrassing, and turbulent moments they never lost hope that their children were brought to this world to leave a mark. So know that I have two beautiful girls with my Cuban/Mexican husband I find myself seeking the same for them.
Work:
After five years with the county I moved to Chicago and began to work in the private sector. I am currently employed as an HR Director with an amazing non profit agency, El Valor. I have found that upon returning to the non profit world I was filled with passion and the feeling of fulfillment. The customers (Adults w/Disabilities, 0-5 children, and the parents of both), mainly Hispanic, have immense needs and therefore my work makes me feel needed. How many people can say that about their current positions?
Our agency also has programs were we work with local universities and offer degrees to working Hispanic adults. Degrees like Master and Doctrines are put at arms reach to Hispanic adults with low income. The classes are held within the communities at accessible locations and with feasible hours.
Conclusion:
Needless to say I have a passion for HR and our Hispanic culture. I have made it my mission in life to educate employees and assist all individuals who have needs but do not know how or were to voice them.

Greetings! I am a Human Resources Generalist based in New York City. I pride myself in starting at the bottom, obtaining a degree as an adult (married, two children and a full time job) and moving up the ladder to my last position as a Senior Vice President for a Chilean bank! I love my job - specially the "people" part of it. I originally started in the Operations side of the business and was fortunate enough to have a mentor who became a life-long friend who headed Operations & Administration; he taught me the personnel side of the business. I believe our work together for a London based company (Midland Bank plc) afforded me the most exposure and challenge; we started the bank with 30 something people and it grew to 300+! Those years were incredible and so worthwhile.
Banco de Chile's assets in the USA were bought by Citibank and after a year and a couple of months, most of us in the two branches (NYC-Miami) were let go; I was one of the last to go this past March. After some reflection time, I have started to apply in my field (HR) but not necessarily in banks, with not much luck-this is a challege to me since in the past it was always easy to land a job! I look forward to what the future brings...
I was born in Cuba and came to the USA when I was seven; I guess the best advice I can give anyone in this line of work (including myself) is to remain true to oneself, persevere, do A LOT of networking and, God-willing, prayers will be answered!

I am currently a recruiter for the Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) in Fort Worth, Texas. I was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pa. to Puerto Rican parents. I graduated from Rutgers University with a M.S.W. and have worked in urban education for the past 15 years. FWISD has a total of 135 schools and 80,000 students. We have a 60% Latino/Hispanic student population and we are constantly seeking highly qualified, passionate, enthusiastic, bilingual professionals.

My previous job as an administrator at a small charter school in Trenton, NJ gave me full spectrum a public education institution.
