My name is Casey and I'm from Raleigh, North Carolina. I've been working in the Marketing field since 2003. I lived and studied in Monterrey, Mexico for approximately nine months. An internship I completed while there with Trevino & Associates gave me great exposure to the Advertising and agency side of Marketing. My passion is branding and brand communications. Some of the greatest challenges for me as a marketer are the resistance to change and the development of the professional community amongst Hispanics here in North Carolina. I am always looking to network and develop professional resources.

How did you get into this profession?
I'm in the processes of breaking into the profession altogether. While at Northern Arizona University, I decided that I didn't want a minor, so I picked up another major: Marketing.
What was the one job you held that most opened doors for you?
All of my work experience has led me to doors, most of which I've had to open myself.
Do you plan to remain on this career track?
I'd love to get in to the advertising side of marketing. Namely Internet marketing. We're using it now, and I know that those of us on this site are not the only ones that are looking.
What are the greatest challenges your profession has presented?
I've been a professional student up until December of 2008 when I was so eagerly introduced to the "real" world. Given today's economy, I've found it difficult, but not impossible to try and penetrate the job market. I'm in for stiff competition from other grads and professionals that are seeking employment in the field. Now is the time to be positive and seek out new opportunities for improvement.
Where are you from?
Phoenix, Arizona
What is your best piece of advice for those in your line of work?
Well, if you're trying to get in, be patient, yet assertive. Right now is the best time to showcase oneself in order to prove that you're a valuable asset to the company. Differentiate, differentiate, differentiate. It's the best time to prove that you can hang with the big dogs.

Years of work and living in varied cultures and job fields have blessed me with a broad based knowledge of how Latin Americans live, love and conduct business. My wife (born in Colombia) has taught me to distinguish and be sensitive to the subtle nuances and differences between countries and regions. I have used this knowledge to do market development throughout the region.

If there is one piece of advice that I would give to someone wanting to work cross culturally, it would be to always put yourself in your counterpart's head. IE: What does he/she really want or need. Their words often do not reveal this as they are too diplomatic. What you hear may not be an accurate portrayal of their thoughts and needs. Read their eyes, body English, thoughts and in between the lines.

I started out working in advertising sales and was fortunate enough to be asked to develop all the marketing ofr the first all Spanish radio station in Arkansas. Continued working in advertising sales with Spanish newspapers and finally decided to start my own marketing consultation company, Rey Hernandez Marketing. My company help organizations and businesses to effectively reach the Hispanic consumer in Arkansas and surrounding states. Originally from El Paso, Texas I entered the military and worked in art, television production, and recruiting. So it was a short step into my advertising and marketing field from there after retiring from the Marines. As a consultant there is not always a client so I do have a full time position at a community college. the best advice I would have for anyone in this field is to be active in your community ( I am in LULAC) and to be constantly networking.

Hola! My name is Connie Ruiz and I have fallen in love with marketing since 1986 when I started working in the hospitality industry. I enjoyed discovering and analizing the potential markets for each hotel property, creating a marketing plan and strategy and going after the business. The salesperson in me loved the thrill of the sale and the satisfaction of the closing. I am an independent and creative soul and cannot be bound by corporate restrictions that make no sense and limit my creativity. I have worked with many good companies that greatly benefited by allowing me to help make them more successful. My career path has to be in sales, marketing and customer relations. It is not just what I do, it's what I am.
My best advice for those in this line of work is: fall in love with your product or service, maintain your integrity and work ethic above all and find a field or company compatible with yourself.

How did you get into this profession? - I began my career in marketing working in the Latin American group at Anixter.

What was the one job you held that most opened doors for you? - Anixter opened all sorts of doors for me as they made it possible for me to move around in the company and gain knowledge while I worked.

Do you plan to remain on this career track? - Yes. But I want to branch out into Latin America to make use of my language background.

What are the greatest challenges your profession has presented? - Bridging the gap between slaes & marketing. Teaching sales that marketing is a team player to sales.
