Louis, I come from a background where my mom spoke Spanish but never taught me or my siblings. So I am in that arean of looking like "of course she speaks Spanish" and then being able to only form a few sentences. Ok, ok, I could have taken Spanish lessons - but I almost failed in high school because once again, the teacher thought I spoke Spanish and would give me low marks for not knowing it already. So......fade to the future..........I am smart, I go to work for clinic in the Bay area with a largely Spanish speaking clientele. The executive director was a grandmotherly Hispanic who took the reigns of the clinic when nobody else wanted to. Eventually the city of Santa Clara funded it. I was hired as her assistant. I limmediatly started looking for grants to upgrade their computers, streamline the antiquidated systems, and bring more money into the clinic. WHAM!!! I was stopped in my tracks. They were intimidated by me rather than being happy about the grants and benefits I was trying to bring to the clinic.End of story we did not get the new computers from Apple (I was not "authorized" to apply for the grant) I have NEVER understood why the Latino culture does not hold each other up like other cultures. I work with international graduates from all over the world and they support each other, boost each other up, go for the good of the all, and I have not felt this in the Hispanic/Latino community. My God, we are at least still having babies - so our population is the one that continues to grow and is the youngest. If we could all stand together and support one another we would have a HUGE voice. I love my culture, I just don't know why they cannot support one another. Other cultures stand together (taking the gold out of grandma's tooth fillings) for the good of all. I hope that ours will do the same sometime
Dear Bernadette:
I see that in your case you were not given the opportunity to learn spanish and I believe that you now realized how much better it could of been the other way around. However, in my place although my upbringing was away from the Hispanic environment my parents always spoke Spanish at home which gave us the opportunity to maintain our heritage. Also, I see that your clientel are Hispanics and maybe now with all that contact your Spanish could improve. You state that your were fortunate to obtain grants to keep your business going and imagine how this makes you feel specially as it it relates to a Hispanic culture. As per the International students, well, they see how being in the USA could privide to their future so, they are so greatful for this opportunity so, they want to help one another despite of the different ethnic groups and that is something that we Hispanics as a large ethnic group do not participate and that isbecause we are either to busy earning a living to stay afloat but, what it is more obvious that we Hispanics do not want to help one another because it would be fair to say that there is some kind of jeousy, in other words we hate to see us grow specially somebody else instead of them. Here in New York we are divided by our neighborhoods and how we have been able to grow up and who we grew up with including the Income Groups that we live with. Some have lived in greener enviroment while others in a dull and dirty side of town. Subsequently, his should not matter because as they say the "Cream Does Raise to The ToP". However, one must want to have the ability and want to become that cream. You keep working and becoming the most that you can be by being proud of who you are and how you as a Hispanic going to the top without knocking your own on your way up.. Regards,Louis
