Tomás Sutón Bola

One Bad Night In Mexico (But 100 Good Poems in the USA)

If I can write a book about my personal experiences, why not you also? I actually never before now, had thought of writing a book. I was just writing some journal notes about what happened to me and father-in-law, on a trip down to Villa Hidalgo, Durango, México. Then, one day my brother in Austin, Texas told me that I should make a book out of that story and publish it. Well, the more I thought about it, I finally decided that it would be a good project for a retired man, 70 years of age. So, I began to write and re-write and have some people to review and edit the manuscript, until I finally decided that enough is enough and I then started to search for a publisher. This task seemed as difficult as writing & editing the book. However, I decided to go the self-publishing route, in order to maintain and retain all my book rights. But, I must say that after you have written a good story (whether it is fiction or non-fiction), the main factor is promoting the book in the most efficient manner available. Obviously, you would want to sell as many copies as possible, at least to pay for the self-publishing cost. That, I have not done effectively yet, mainly because I have other "irons in the fire," to which I must attend and furthermore, I did not publish with the idea of making it a commercial project, but mainly for posterity's sake (you know, the children and family). However, the book can be bought at Barnes and Noble; and on the Internet at Amazon.com. I also will add this; in that the true story itself was not very long, I added 1oo of my poems (I consider myself to be a "practical" poet), at the end of the story. I am particularly proud of the first poem after the story, because it is written as an epic poem, which tells the story in rhyming verse, according to the meter of the old cowboy song, "Ghost Riders in the Sky." As such, I welcome any comments that anyone might have on this and/or similar subjects and I enjoy communicating in Spanish or English.

Since my father was a writer, I found your posting very interesting. But what is the title of your book? I couldn't find it on Amazon.

Hi... I have started a book also, in English with my significant other. I am originally from Canada, and have been living in Mexico for 27 years, longer than my home country. I wish Thomas all the best with his book. I am also a poet and have written volumns, especially as a teacher in Mexico. I'll write one here that is short and sweet, but says alot of what we bilinguals already know.

I wrote it for my elementary kids when working as a teacher.

Not all Canadians live in the snow,
or travel in sleighs as far as I know.
Not all Americans are movies stars,
or trying their best to make it to Mars.
Very few Mexicans have time for siesta,
are riding on donkeys or having a fiesta.
Oh Yes, there's a few and I'm sure that they do,
but most are just people, like me and like you.

Great! I am writing a book about my experiences in Latin America- Having lived in four countries and having met "dictators" who pratically ran the country/s by force--awesome feeling. Then come back to the USA and ...360 degree in the way we live and enjoy freedom.
