“Teamplayer: One who unites others toward a shared destiny through sharing information and ideas, empowering others and developing trust.”- Dennis Kinlaw
Dear Leaders,
Successful organizations know that teamwork is essential to drive results. Does your organization encourage teamwork? Do you personally and as a leader encourage and reward teamwork?
Last week we shared tips on what a successful team is and have been asked “what’s the best way to get started?”
The foundation is to have written (and communicated) vision and mission statements and supporting goals. For those of you that have attended our Leadership Journey™ you’ve seen this before but it’s a crucial component for creating successful teams and organizations. You must have the following:
VISION =
It’s a dream or aspiration that you as the leader have for yourself and your organization. The vision provides direction and guides us to a place far away. It may be unattainable but we can try and focus our attention and make strides for getting there.
MISSION=
Represents what you are going to do and how you’re going to do it to carry out the vision. It makes the vision come closer to us; it brings the vision alive for us and makes it more personal. The mission begins to bring clarity to our vision.
GOALS=
Bring 100 percent personal clarity to your vision and mission. It requires ACTION. Think in terms of what, when, and how the actions will be carried out, by whom and by when.
Goals must be “SMART”:
-Specific
-Measurable
-Realistic
-Achievable (or actionable)
-Time-bound
Closely linked (and required) are roles and responsibilities. Each team member must clearly understand not only their primary role but also the roles of others. This does not mean roles and responsibilities are not shared, but rather that clarity exists regarding expectations and ownership.
And remember, ALL behaviors and actions both from individual, team and organizational levels must support your vision, mission and goals in order to achieve success.
We’re here to help you increase your team and organizations level of success!
Sincerely,
Jan Mayer-Rodriguez and Michael W. Kublin
